The World's First Fashion Bloggers

Recently, a Mark Twain biographer dubbed the noted 19th century humorist "the world's first blogger." According to Robert Hirst, Twain's autobiographical technique was not unlike that of contemporary bloggers, who, Hirst notes, tend to eschew chronology in favor of informal, meandering recollection. Like a fish without a bicycle, Twain was 'a blogger without a web.' Perhaps the same can be said, then, of the women pictured above. Just a bunch of proto fashion bloggers without a cable modem or a scrap of Modcloth. Sounds kinda dreamy, right?

Sponsor Spotlight: Vintage Strings & Lola Vintage

We here at Huzzah! Vintage are incredibly thankful for our sponsors. Not only do they help us keep the blaaag going (and our little dog fed!), but they also happily inject some sexiness into what is otherwise a relatively modest fashion and culture logbook. Two sponsors currently bringing the sexy in a big way are Vintage Strings of Central Cali and Lola Vintage of the Mitten State (which, we only recently learned, means 'Michigan' to Midwesterners). Though their modesty probably prevents them from recognizing this, trust us when we say that the ladies behind both of these shops are hawt, just like their vintage wares. And were we not firmly committed to our own dowdy academic aesthetic, we'd be wearing these pieces rather compelling you to purchase them. Onward now to the shops, Gentle Readers!

Slips to Marimekko: "Why Do You Hate Us?!"

Aside from the two or five instances when a model's crotch viciously started devouring her dress, the Marimekko Spring/Summer 2011 Flower Market show was lovely in both form and content. The Finnish design house delivered a signature collection of simple, crisp cuts and bold, graphic prints, all of which looked especially good over proper foundation garments:

You Decide!

Is this:
a) the signature piece in Anthropologie's new Fall menswear line?
b) outtakes from a hip new Fruit of the Loom campaign?
c) an art project designed to make you feel bad about your consumptive practices?

If you guessed C, congratulations! The Zero Footprint Shirt series by New York-based artist Dave Rittinger works to remind us that the clothes we wear have as much to do with saving the environment as the cars we drive (or don't, hopefully). The leaf shirt is, of course, not available for purchase, but if it were, it could significantly reduce the rising core temperature of the earth by virtue of all the shade it would encourage people to throw at its wearer. (And doesn't the idea of solving the problem of global warming through bitchiness sound downright fantastic?!)

Finally! A Bike Helmet for the Vain & Fashionable

Have you ever looked at your bicycle helmet and thought to yourself, "Meh. I'll risk cracking my head open to spare today's expertly-coiffed hair?" If you answered yes, then you're not alone. According to statistics compiled by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than half of all US bike riders routinely forgo a helmet, despite the fact that doing so puts them at significantly higher risk for head injury and death. While most surveyed claim that they simply forget, or assume it's not necessary given the distance of the ride, it goes without saying that vanity likely plays a role in the decision--consciously or not.

Well, now, for a mere $450, you can look fly and save your big fat melon from traumatic brain injury. The Hövding (Swedish for "chieftain") looks like your typical hipster cowl, but actually houses sensors that signal an internal airbag to fill and deploy upon impact. Though we're not entirely sold on the idea of an airbag for our head, the test video below has sold us on the need to overcome our own conceit and wear a damn old school helmet all the time, every time because this video is scarier than a teabagger at a Glenn Beck rally. Yes, that scary.

When 'Ready To Wear' Isn't

Anna Sui is obviously a talented and innovative designer, but we have to wonder whether (and why) anyone would spend $200 for the privilege of wearing a tent dress with boobie eyes. It's a clever runway look–and we certainly wish that our ovaries and lower intestine looked that pretty (though who's to say they don't....)–but having to explain that the rather prominent black dots on your nipples are part of a savvy statement issued by a top designer is akin to having to explain a failed joke (i.e., deeply unsatisfying and frequently embarrassing). Of course, if that's your bag, you might want to consider completing the look with a whimsical brain hat like the one pictured above. Your kookily-outlined bust will suddenly seem like the least strange thing about you.

Fashion SAY WHAT?! Moment of the Week

polyvore

You see those three dudes outfitted in head-to-toe Merona brand menswear? Yeah, them. They're apparently the co-founders of Polyvore, the Internet's very profitable answer to the paper doll and the second largest producer of chewing gum for the eye (though we expect they'll outpace teevee soon enough). While we don't harbor any fantasies about the nature of capitalism or the oft-romanticized entrepreneurial spirit, we were more than a little surprised by this bit of information. And once we've satisfactorily reconciled our impression of Forever 21 with the brand's new line of maternity wear, we'll get to work on quelling the cognitive dissonance created by this latest fashion industry revelation. oof.

The Fashion of the Future Today!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Until recently, we thought adult jumpers and gladiator sandals were the contemporary equivalent of the midi--i.e., elaborate jokes crafted by the naturally-awful CEOs of Urban Outfitters and American Apparel at the expense of fashion-forward women worldwide. As it turns out, though, these items have been the stuff of fashion fantasy since the early 1950s when at least one stylist working on a Life pictorial about the 'future of women's fashion' decided they were indeed our fashion destiny. Guess you can't fight fate.
