Free People Still Enjoys Swindling You

Based on the style of the chain and the gold tone of the hardware, we doubt that the Free People specimen on the left is from the 1930s (as indicated in the description). Were there an image of the interior or some indication of the maker, we could better date the piece, but, of course, neither of those things is provided. Just take their word for it! (Or purchase a similar piece with confidence from Verseau Vintage.)

Back in September, we highlighted some of the many problems with Free People's new 'vintage' collection in the hope that the retail chain would stop bamboozling its customers and start practicing some of the social responsibility associated with its cannibalized 1960s bohemian aesthetic. A quick check of its 'Vintage Loves' selection today, however, reveals that nothing has changed. The company is still price gouging. The company is still incorrectly dating its wares by more than ten years. The company is still trying to pass off obviously contemporary items as vintage. And the company is still offering items that appear to be in non-wearable vintage condition. Given this complete lack of professional oversight and corporate responsibility vis-a-vis the tiny vintage endeavor, we can only imagine what the company's manufacturing practices and policies must look like (NIKE, cough, cough).

Luckily, Vintage Loves doesn't carry anything you can't find in much better condition and for much cheaper from small business owners who probably won't turn around and donate your money to anti-gay Republican U.S. senators like Rick Santorum. (We're just sayin'.)

Need a pair of filthy vintage leather driving gloves? Free People has you covered! (Or you could buy a clean pair for $50 less from Retro Wear Vintage.)

Cute vest! Too bad it has probably been marked up $125 from the actual purchase price. Pick up an equally cute six-button vest from Mychu Vintage for a savings of more than $100!!!! What a STEAL!!!!!!

Tofurky Day Food Coma Wrap-Up

The Boy did the lion's share of yesterday's cooking, and for that, we are eternally grateful. In addition to TWO Tofurkys with all the fixins, we feasted on orange juiced and candied yams, a baby spinach salad with fresh cracked pepper, sea salt, shaved Pecorino and lemon oil dressing, cranberry sauce, and an avocado, grapefruit and chevre salad.

We ended our feast with this homemade vegan chocolate mousse pie, which is made of tofu. UNBELIEVABLE, Right?!

As the only meat-eater in the house, Sassy Mae enjoyed a dinner that we are reasonably certain contained some turkey (or at least parts thereof). Onward now to Christmas.

Gobble Gobble, Cough Cough

The Boy went to Iowa last week to take part in the ritual flogging known as a dissertation defense, and came back with the fracking Plague. Now we're all sicker than stuck hogs, and wondering who's going to make the damn Tofurky tomorrow. Sassy has already refused (citing something about an important nap she's been planning), so it looks like we're going to have to mix up some Codeine cocktails and power through it. In the meantime, we're watching old episodes of The French Chef with Julia Child and wishing that contemporary cooking shows were even half as fabulous.

Safe travels and happy feasting!

On Pins & Needles (In Your Skin)

Can anyone explain to us the above image from a 1960 Angel Face Cosmetics advertisement? It would appear that the model's brooch is anchored to her bare flesh, but surely this isn't the case! Surely she's not suffering that much to look "lovely in lime" and "marvelous in mauve!" Right?!

Slips to Marimekko: "Why Do You Hate Us?!"

Aside from the two or five instances when a model's crotch viciously started devouring her dress, the Marimekko Spring/Summer 2011 Flower Market show was lovely in both form and content. The Finnish design house delivered a signature collection of simple, crisp cuts and bold, graphic prints, all of which looked especially good over proper foundation garments:

Of Women & Clowns

Photoshop and plastic surgery aren't the only means by which beauty has been standardized. As the rather fadish stencil products featured above and below suggest, low-tech practices of facial homogenization have long worked in concert with more expensive and prominent techniques to help manufacture and maintain a particular visual grammar of middle-class feminine beauty. That some of these practices resemble those used by professional clowns should be of no surprise to anyone vaguely familiar with the history of patriarchy (or clowns).

Gretchen's Post-PR Collection Even Worse Than Expected

It's like our worst sartorial nightmare: Free People's tragic 'hipster earth mother' and American Apparel's tragic 'hipster harlot' all rolled into one unfortunate chocha-disclosing mess. (Thank gawd for the expertly 'shopped butterfly and string flourishes!)

You Decide!

Is this:
a) the signature piece in Anthropologie's new Fall menswear line?
b) outtakes from a hip new Fruit of the Loom campaign?
c) an art project designed to make you feel bad about your consumptive practices?

If you guessed C, congratulations! The Zero Footprint Shirt series by New York-based artist Dave Rittinger works to remind us that the clothes we wear have as much to do with saving the environment as the cars we drive (or don't, hopefully). The leaf shirt is, of course, not available for purchase, but if it were, it could significantly reduce the rising core temperature of the earth by virtue of all the shade it would encourage people to throw at its wearer. (And doesn't the idea of solving the problem of global warming through bitchiness sound downright fantastic?!)

The Reader's Medicine Cabinet

Some people derive great joy from peeking into other people's medicine cabinets, the contents of which--either in their abundance or absence--seem to reveal so much about their owners. We, however, are much more inclined to peep a home's bookshelves since it is there that we learn about our hosts' hopes, fears and true political affinities (among other things). We're not sure what stories our library might divulge about us, but we imagine the words 'aging,' 'hipster' and 'pinko' must drive most of the plot lines.
