Egregiously Overdue Shop Update

We touched down in El-A back in August, and now that we're reasonably settled in (i.e., have discovered where to get spicy thai noodles and stiff Highball cocktails), we figured it was time to start refreshing ye olde nostalgia shoppe. Look out for some soopa secret snaps of the new casa in the coming weeks, too; it's not a gloriously drafty Victorian like we had in Oakland, but it fits all of our books (and, really, what more does one need from a home?).

The Vintage Kitchen

Have you ever found yourself watching HGTV's House Hunters and rolling your eyes at the boners that everyone seems to get over granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and kitchen islands? Yeah, us too.

Feeling Spotty

(Editor's Note: We're taking the day off to go frolic at the DMV. In our absence, please enjoy a fun guest post from our friends at Bess Georgette!)

Describing someone as 'spotty' isn't always considered complimentary, especially given that 'spotty' can refer to a person with an inconsistent personality or skin problem. However, the world of spots isn't all bad! After all, who can resist the lure of a lovely polka dot dress or the sense of satisfaction found in completing a 'spot the difference' challenge? We're happy to say that Bess Georgette can help you with both!

Our 'spotty' challenge features an image from an August 1, 1955 issue of Vogue. Pictured are Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston, who starred together in the movie Damn Yankees. Are you able to spot the five differences between the original image on the left and the slightly altered image on the right? While we won't be providing any prizes to those who succeed, we can offer 15% off every item in our store now thru February 11. Simply enter coupon code 'SPOTTY' at checkout. (You'll even find some pretty polka dot pieces waiting to tempt you.)

So what are you waiting for? You only have 'til February 11 to do your bit and help give spots a good name!

Sponsor Spotlight: Bombshell Bettie's Vintage & Revolving Styles

Now that the holidays are over and you have all the rainbow-striped toe socks you could possibly want, it's time to partake in the grand post-Christmas tradition of buying yourself the stuff you actually wanted. For us, that meant an Apple TV system and an equally bourgeois not-at-eye-level-on-the-supermarket-shelf bottle of Cabernet. For you, perhaps that means cute vintage swag like this dress from Bombshell Bettie's Vintage or these shoes from Revolving Styles. Go on, girl. You deserve it...

Sponsor Spotlight: Vintage Strings & Lola Vintage

We here at Huzzah! Vintage are incredibly thankful for our sponsors. Not only do they help us keep the blaaag going (and our little dog fed!), but they also happily inject some sexiness into what is otherwise a relatively modest fashion and culture logbook. Two sponsors currently bringing the sexy in a big way are Vintage Strings of Central Cali and Lola Vintage of the Mitten State (which, we only recently learned, means 'Michigan' to Midwesterners). Though their modesty probably prevents them from recognizing this, trust us when we say that the ladies behind both of these shops are hawt, just like their vintage wares. And were we not firmly committed to our own dowdy academic aesthetic, we'd be wearing these pieces rather compelling you to purchase them. Onward now to the shops, Gentle Readers!

Free People Still Enjoys Swindling You

Based on the style of the chain and the gold tone of the hardware, we doubt that the Free People specimen on the left is from the 1930s (as indicated in the description). Were there an image of the interior or some indication of the maker, we could better date the piece, but, of course, neither of those things is provided. Just take their word for it! (Or purchase a similar piece with confidence from Verseau Vintage.)

Back in September, we highlighted some of the many problems with Free People's new 'vintage' collection in the hope that the retail chain would stop bamboozling its customers and start practicing some of the social responsibility associated with its cannibalized 1960s bohemian aesthetic. A quick check of its 'Vintage Loves' selection today, however, reveals that nothing has changed. The company is still price gouging. The company is still incorrectly dating its wares by more than ten years. The company is still trying to pass off obviously contemporary items as vintage. And the company is still offering items that appear to be in non-wearable vintage condition. Given this complete lack of professional oversight and corporate responsibility vis-a-vis the tiny vintage endeavor, we can only imagine what the company's manufacturing practices and policies must look like (NIKE, cough, cough).

Luckily, Vintage Loves doesn't carry anything you can't find in much better condition and for much cheaper from small business owners who probably won't turn around and donate your money to anti-gay Republican U.S. senators like Rick Santorum. (We're just sayin'.)

Need a pair of filthy vintage leather driving gloves? Free People has you covered! (Or you could buy a clean pair for $50 less from Retro Wear Vintage.)

Cute vest! Too bad it has probably been marked up $125 from the actual purchase price. Pick up an equally cute six-button vest from Mychu Vintage for a savings of more than $100!!!! What a STEAL!!!!!!

On Pins & Needles (In Your Skin)

Can anyone explain to us the above image from a 1960 Angel Face Cosmetics advertisement? It would appear that the model's brooch is anchored to her bare flesh, but surely this isn't the case! Surely she's not suffering that much to look "lovely in lime" and "marvelous in mauve!" Right?!

Sponsor Style File: Luncheonette Vintage & Rust Belt Threads

Have you checked out all the vintage goodness at Rust Belt Threads and Luncheonette Vintage lately? We just popped in to look for a winter jacket and found a grip of hats, shoes, dresses and housewares that we'd love to try to sneak past The Boy. If only his powers of observation were more classically masculine...
