Vintage Therapy w/ Bess Georgette: Overcoming My 3 Irrational Vintage Fears

(Editor's Note: We're stepping aside today to help guest blogger Tracey of Bess Georgette work through her unique sartorial anxieties. [The first step is admitting you have a problem, gurl!])

When I first started dipping my toes into ‘vintage’ waters, I made a few purchases that I probably got a little wrong. In reflecting on those past experiences, I’ve come to realize that my shopping habits reflect my avoidance of three completely irrational vintage fears. In the interests of overcoming these hang-ups, I thought it would be beneficial to share them with the world.

1. Side Zippers
Now, I have nothing against the side zipper per se, I just think my first unsuccessful attempts at mastering the side zipper may have forever associated them with indelicate maneuvers, limbs being trapped at funny angles, and the threat of asphyxiation as I struggle to free myself from the tangle of fabric.

2. Pencil Skirts
As anyone with curves will know, pencil skirts are not always a friend – something a little more forgiving and ‘skimming’ generally works better. Why, hello there, lovely full skirt! Pleated, pocketed or buttoned – however that full skirt comes is fine by me and helps to keep those fitted fears at bay.

3. Polyester Fabric
I’m a cotton girl through and through – I like the way it feels and the way the fabric breathes. I have a feeling that my bad associations with polyester stem from being a child born during the seventies, where bad fashion and polyester were all the rage.

My completely irrational vintage fears aside, you’ll be delighted to hear that Bess Georgette, my online vintage store, is having a SALE, and there’s absolutely nothing scary about that! From now until Sunday, October 10 all existing stock is 10% – 25% off (depending on how many items you buy). So allow me, your self-appointed vintage clothing therapist, to share with you some advice: put any vintage fears to one side and explore some vintage joys with Bess Georgette instead!

love this post! I agree with all those fine points, love a pencil skirt but when it's time to put mine on I usually opt out...

I used to love wearing butterfly collared polyester shirts in high school (late 90s), but if I ever got a little too hot, it would be a bad scene.

this post is great. Love your shop, Tracey!

You know I love a size zipper dress...but most of the time when I buy one they're measured to the outside of the zipper so they're off by an inch or more so the don't fit. I can't tell you how many times this has happened...ok 4. I love the perfect fit the side zipper gives, but unless its got buttons down the front I have that same panic feeling as my shoulders get stuck in the waist...LOL

Back, oh about 30 lbs ago I used to wear the crap out of pencil skirts...now I don't even own one. Full skirts all the way! The fuller, the better!

And don't get me started on polyester! I really don't even like to buy it for my shop. I buy blends, but I only buy all-poly if its like a 70s blouse or something and it has to be REALLY cute. I hate that stuff! I have started a love affair with linen lately though.

the worst thing about the side zip is getting a little of your skin caught in one, NOT GOOD.
