nice trick! i just got a free B&B haircut here in nyc at their teaching studio and the stylist used surf spray on my hair and i was diggin it. now i can "buy" it!
hmm, I'm not sure, but I think the chemical compounds of Epson are vastly different from those of Kosher salt (which is generally a coarser table salt that also meets certain religious dietary requirements).
Epson is widely available at your local drug store, and it makes for a nice bath!
Ok, I know this is really sad and is going to show how outta date I am with the current trends but... What is Surf Spray? What is it supposed to accomplish? And can it go into any spray bottle? Or does it have to be an empty B&B bottle (which again I have NO CLUE what is!) lol :)
Does it have to be in the B&B bottle? I've been wanting to try the surf spray, but I'm being frugal and would rather make it... Just wondering if the bottle is snything more than a regular spray bottle?!?
the hair gel I happened to have on-hand stated that it was water-based, but I imagine that if one of the first few ingredients is water, that's another good indication.
I've never tried the surf spray, but I wanted to try this. I am in LOVE! My hair is to my mid back and straight but this gets it that wavy, beachy look..definitely! Thank you SO much!
I love the B&B Surf spray, but it is so damn expensive. Thank you for posting this so now I can attempt to make my own version. I'm glad I still have my empty B&B bottle laying around.
How do you apply this product?? With wet hair? or dry? Also, do bath salts work as well? That would save me the time of trying to find epson salt at the store!!
Epsom salts are magnesium salts definitely not the same as Kosher salt which is sodium chloride. Epsom salt is very inexpensive and can be found easily at most drug or grocery stores. Makes a good soak for achy muscles too.
my mom the hairdresser told me about Epsom Salts when I was a permed teen. The magnesium makes your hair curly if you have any curl or wave. It's also a good replacement for Nexxus's 'Rejuva Perm'. Spray into damp hair.
okay, for everyone asking what this is, here's the description from the Bumble and Bumble web site:
Sexy, salty, sun-dried, windswept styles - whenever, wherever. Who: Anyone; excellent for wavy types and surfers with winter blues; adds body to fine hair.
When: Anytime; after Prep or Tonic Lotion, during styling.
How: Work through damp or dry hair; let dry naturally or blow-dry with a diffuser. Or on dry hair for detailing and adding lift at the roots. The less you touch it, the longer it will hold.
Surf Spray gives that at-the-beach look making your hair texturized and wavy. Many people have different results depending on the wave in their hair but even people with straight hair should give this cheap version a shot!
Just wondering how Sea Salt would work?? I tried this and my scalp seemed a bit itchy due to the salt.. may try it with the sea salt to see if it dissolves better.
For the ones that keep insisting on using table salt, sea salt, kosher salt, etc; Epsom salt is MAGNESIUM SULFATE. I.E. 2 different electrolytes. Sodium chloride will not give you the same result; it's a totally different chemical. If you were to confuse the 2 in medication form, you'd probably die; seeing as an excess or deficit of blood level magnesium can cause fatal cardiac arrhythmia. Good luck with that!
Go to the Bumble and Bumble website and search for surf spray. They have posted videos of stylists showing how to apply the spray and how to style your hair.
That's too funny:). For those of us who already have wavy hair and want to enhance it, be ready for a HUGE head of hair. I really lives it initially but as the day wore on it got bigger lol. Definitely works!
Surf spray is AMAZING! Im going to try the DIY . My hair designer has me towel dry my hair, squirt the spray in my hair section off and twirl tight around finger then i take a blow dryer holding about 18 inches from my head and scrunch my hair at the same time. Key to this method is to blow down not up and leave hair a bit damp. Once dry scrunch an its perfect. My hair is far from curly but when Im done it looks like a professional did my hair .

You are a genius! I'm in that difficult "growing out" stage, which may turn into "shave my head" stage if things do not improve.

When you say "squirt" would you say about a quarter size or more?
When you say "squirt", would you say that is about a quarter size or more??
I've always wanted to try this for my wavy hair but it's was too pricey! Thanks for sharing this recipe...can't wait to try it!

@ little-mama
a tad bit more than a quarter...perhaps a tablespoon. You can always add more gel to the mixture if you're not pleased with the results!
How do you know if gel is water based? Are there common brands that are water based?

SOOOOOOO Awesome! I have wavy hair that frizz's......always wanted to try B&B.
I cant wait to make my own.
Thanks for sharing!
I just to use John Frieda's Beach Hair but they stopped making it. Never knew about Bumble, I'll have to try this DYI concoction.
B&B Surf Spray is my new favorite product, and I am definitely going to try this recipe! Thanks a bunch for posting it!
Thank you for posting this! I'm excited to try it and to share it with others

Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate, and Kosher salt is sodium chloride.
For your hair's sake, please don't use Kosher salt. ; )
I've seen lots of "recipes" that call for sea salt.
Going to the drug store and getting this now!!
What about sea salt?
So excited to try this! How does this work on really straight hair? Should this be sprayed on wet hair? Damp? Dry?
Great tip, I paid $25 for B&B.
Hello what the heck is this stuff people????

You can also use olive oil. That's how I made mine. I LOVE it! Works great
Go to the Bumble and Bumble website and search for surf spray. They have posted videos of stylists showing how to apply the spray and how to style your hair.
Translation: ONLY USE EPSOM SALT; not garlic salt, not seasoned salt, not rock salt, and not a pack of salt.....it's hair, not a brisket.
That's too funny:). For those of us who already have wavy hair and want to enhance it, be ready for a HUGE head of hair. I really lives it initially but as the day wore on it got bigger lol. Definitely works!
Will this dry your hair out?

I just ran out of my surf spray, the timing of this recipe couldn't be better!
Use just a drop of coconut flavoring found in spice section and the smell is great! Love this stuff. I use it every day!!!
Thank you...just threw out my three bumble and bumble bottles...ahhh
You mean olive oil instead of water?
Would this work using scented Epsom salt? I have calming Epsom salts and I love the smell. Would the perfumes in the scented version.harm my hair?
Is it OK to use scented Epsom salt? I have calming Epsom salts and love the fragrance. Or would the perfume be harmful to my hair?

try it on damp hair, let dry a bit. Twist into a clip take down before leave the house. It looks great! full waves
Love your idea. I love surfer hair
Love the surfer look it brings to your hair.
