Getting To Hope You Like Me

The inimitable ladies of Small Earth Vintage and Digs Frocks and Books recently tagged me in two fun--and curiously similar--Q&A memes that I have reproduced below with my own much less amusing answers. Thanks, ladies, for thinking of me! ;)
gg

Pictured Above: #9 below

1. Your hair?
horrifically permed from the 3rd through the 6th grade
2. Your favorite food? fresh, extra sour sourdough
3. Your favorite drink? mint julep (quite possibly the best thing about the South?)
4. Your dream/goal? organic mint farmer
5. Your hobby? re-telling personal anecdotes until they're reliably funny
6. Your fear? succumbing to my overwhelming desire to wear elastic-waistband pants all day, every day
7. Where were you last night? at home watching teevee with The Boy
8. Something you say all the time? "It's research!" (in reference to any suggestion that my teevee watching is somehow excessive or idle)

9. Something that you're not? perky
10.
Wishlist item? Smart Car
11. Last thing you did? tried and failed to craft a witty answer to this question
12. What are you wearing? black 'n white striped soft shirt, black cardi, brown slacks, black canvas mary janes
13. Your pets? high maintenance
14. Friends? unnervingly accomplished, funny and rather unfortunately dispersed across the country
15. Missing someone? (see above)
16. Something you're not wearing? hmmmm.....the shackles of femininity?
17. Your favorite store? the Internet

18. Your favorite color? green
19. The last time you cried? robots don't cry, silly!
20. Whens the last time you laughed? hmmmm, well it's wasn't during Modern Family or Cougar Town. THAT I can promise you.
21. One place that I go to over and over? a publicly-subsidized hell more commonly referred to as 'the US Post Office'
22. Where do you eat? over the sink like a common frat boy

Shop Update With A Dash of Preview

The Boy took me to the Pacific Film Archive last night to see Resnais' Je t'aime, je t'aime (1968). It was ok, I suppose, but not NEARLY as good as The Proposal (2009), which we watched last week.

Necessary Baggage

Our friend Bista sent us a link to a San Francisco Chronicle article that at once features some pretty cool upcycled vintage suitcases and represents why the craft of journalism is dead (seriously, if doing a Google image search and stating the obvious while trading in cliches about the so-called 'past' is what constitutes journalism today, then call us reporters and this blog a daily).

Here are our own picks (check those clever medicine cabinets!):

The Wet Look

When you live--as we all do, Gentle Readers of the Huzzah! logbook--in a world completely drunk on images, the image as such can easily become something of an unremarkable bore (and looking, a sort of repetition compulsion). So imagine my surprise when I found myself searching the image below with such intensity this morning that I misjudged the location of my mouth and proceeded to pour uncharacteristically hot coffee on my lap (and my little lapwarmer)! This image is THAT powerful!!!

I'm not sure if perhaps I have some latent mermaid urges that need to be explored, or if I simply (and understandably, I think) desire to return to the comfort of the womb, but I can't help but be thunderstruck by this photo. In fact, I love it so much that I don't even care that it was probably composed for a Summer's Eve commercial. humph.

Pictured Above: One of the works recently on display at the "Water on Lens" exhibit at The Movieum in London. The exhibit featured photo stills from famous underwater shoots for films, television shows, commercials and music videos. All of these particular images were captured at England's U-Stage, a permanent, fully functional underwater stage roughly the size of a commercial airplane hangar.

Vintage Father-Daughter Moment

After I inappropriately asked a friend of a friend whether her new Little Sister mentee was as cute as my dog, she very smartly responded by relating a darling childhood story wherein she asks her father whether or not she's 'pretty like the mountains.'

"No, Jane," he said, "You're pretty in a different way."

(Nearly melted my cold, black heart.)

D.I.Y. Old Hollywood Glamour

30s

Pictured Above: 1930s Hollywood film stars Marlene Dietrich (top) and Myrna Loy (bottom)

Unencumbered by Christian-inflected Victorian era warnings against female vanity (read: sexuality) and emboldened by the appearance of mass market beauty retailers like Max Factor, Hollywood stars of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s (pan)caked on signature looks that have since become a sort of visual shorthand for the glamour and excess of the era (and the industry). Though such styles are admittedly too bold for everyday wear, the fantastic video tutorial below demonstrates how--with the right tools--they may be tastefully re-created for your next ultra elegant fĂȘte. Because I'm Worth It

It's rare that I keep any of my thrifted treasures for myself--both because I so rarely come across petite sizes and because such hoarding would soon become economically unsustainable--but I did manage to cajole myself into keeping a few items from this month's sweep. Everything featured in the first two photos came from a multi-home estate sale while the 1940s pumps were plucked from a neighborhood Cancer Society shop once they were judiciously marked down 50% to a cool $20. Now to find an occasion...

Alexander McQueen declares war on women's feet:

Watch these starved lizard women walk in McQueen's Cremaster-esque show here. (If you're looking for a tumble, you'll be sorely dismayed to discover that all remain awkwardly upright.)

Analytic Humor

I suspect that the person who found my shop today while searching for cunt necklaces was horribly disappointed. Forty-one whole seconds of her life utterly WASTED.
